The Moʻolelo: MAI KAHIKO MAI & He Manō Ka Nino
The "He Manō Ka Nino" pattern is from our MAI KAHIKO MAI design series. Our kūpuna (elders & ancestors) inspire MAI KAHIKO MAI and remind us of our orientation to our environment's many wao (realms) that serve as our natural and spiritual foundation.
Drawing inspiration from the strength, adaptability, and protective presence of the shark (manō), this motif travels continuously from sleeve to sleeve along the polohiwa—the shoulder line across the back of the shirt evoking another meaning “He mano ka niho,” or “multitudinous are the shark’s teeth.” A single kāpala stamp rests over the left chest, serving as an intentional reminder of boundary, resilience, and ancestral lineage.
Circular Design & In-House Craftsmanship
100% Reclaimed Waste Cotton: Made entirely from pre-consumer virgin cotton diverted directly from North American spinning mills before ever reaching landfills.
Bio-Based Algae Ink™: Individually hand block-printed in our SF Bay Area studio using carbon-negative Algae Ink™ derived from renewable algae biomass, completely eliminating petroleum-based carbon inks.
Small-Batch Butter Yellow Dip-Dye: Custom-dyed in small batches to conserve water, energy, and resources while avoiding excess production waste.
Please note that pattern placement and color can vary from images shown. Pattern & Garment colors will naturally soften and fade over extended use & washing.
