Hā‘awi Pono: Our Giving + Responsibility Framework

Aloha mai kākou,

Hā‘awi Pono is the name we give to a practice that has always been at the heart of Kekoa Creative: to receive with gratitude, to move with intention, and to give back in ways that honor relationship—with ʻāina, with wai, and with the communities that hold us.

This page shares our framework through a Hawaiian worldview—poetic, educational, and layered with kauna—so you can understand how we think about responsibility, impact, and reciprocity in the choices we make.

  • Poʻo - Mālama Hōnua

  • Piko - Hā‘awi Pono

  • ʻAwe - Mālama ʻĀina • Mālama Wai • Kuleana

We understand this framework through the symbolism of the he‘e.

At the po‘o is Mālama Hōnua—the guiding orientation that asks us to hold the long view: the health of the living world, and our responsibility to remain in correct relationship with it.

At the center is the pikoHā‘awi Pono—the place we return to again and again as we make decisions about how we build, how we source, how we give, and how we show up.

From that center extend the ʻawe, the arms of practice.

Nā ʻawe: The Arms of Action

  • Mālama ʻāina is not only a value we speak—it is a relationship we tend.

For us, this ʻawe is about direct impact: what our products are made from, how they are packaged, and how they can return to ʻāina with care.

We prioritize materials and packaging chosen with end-of-life in mind—so that what we offer can be used, loved, and eventually released in ways that minimize harm. We want our customers to feel confident that their purchases were made with consideration for their footprint, not just their beauty.

If you’d like to learn more about the ʻike and values that guide our work, you can read about our Hawaiian heritage, values, and kuleana.

  • Mālama wai is a reminder that water is life, movement, and healing. It is also a reminder that what we do travels.

For us, this ʻawe is about indirect impact—the choices we make in our production processes, and how those choices affect wai and the resource systems that support life.

In practice, this can look like:

    • Micro-batch processes that help us plan intentionally and reduce waste

    • Choosing water-based inks (including certification-aligned options like the Matsui Eco line) and exploring innovations like Algae Ink

    • Working with partners like Everybody.World, whose Trash Tees are micro-batch dyed using sustainable, lower-impact dyes, and whose garment supply chain prioritizes lower transportation impact

    • Using drain-safe materials in production whenever possible

    • For natural dye work, using long-soak vats designed for minimal water and energy use

    • Sourcing body + skin care materials in bulk when appropriate to reduce packaging and transportation

We share these examples not as perfection, but as practice—because mālama is something we return to, again and again.

  • Kuleana, for us, is an internal practice present in all decision-making.

It is not something we perform only when it is visible. It is the constant question beneath the work:

    • Is this pono?

    • Does this honor relationship?

    • Does this choice carry integrity—now, and later?

Kuleana lives in the way we think, the way we choose, and the way we do.

Mana: the force of intention

There is a deeper layer to Hā‘awi Pono: the understanding that intention matters.

Every time you make a purchase, share our work, or show up for us in your own way, you offer support that carries energy and meaning. We receive that with humility—and with responsibility for how we direct it.

This is one of the ways we understand giving: not as a transaction, but as relationship. Not as a moment, but as a practice.
