Frequently Asked Questions

Aloha mai kākou!

We've compiled answers to common questions about Kekoa Creative's Hawaiian sustainable fashion, artisan products, shipping policies, and our commitment to cultural authenticity. If you don't find what you're looking for, please contact us at info@kekoacreative.com.

  • What materials do you use in your sustainable fashion items?

Our clothing features organic natural fibers and reclaimed waste cotton from textile production. We use water-based Algae Ink™ that's OEKO-TEX certified for safety in our printing process. Our commitment to mālama ʻāina (caring for the land) guides our material selection, ensuring minimal environmental impact while maintaining quality and comfort.

    Are your products authentically Hawaiian?

Yes. Kekoa Creative is a Native Hawaiian-owned business with family ties to Waiʻanae, Oʻahu, Maui nui a Piʻilani, and Moku o Keawe. Our designs reflect genuine Hawaiian cultural values and traditions. We also partner with kānaka ʻōiwi (Native Hawaiian) small businesses like Hāloa ʻĀina, Haʻa & Co., and Keālia Organics to offer authentic Hawaiian products.

How should I care for my Kekoa Creative clothing?

For maximum longevity and minimal environmental impact, we recommend washing in cold water with mild, eco-friendly detergent and hanging to dry. This preserves both the printed designs and the integrity of the sustainable fabrics. Specific care instructions are included with each product.

What is the Lāʻau ʻAla Collection by Hāloa ʻĀina?

The Lāʻau ʻAla Collection features endemic Hawaiian sandalwood products from Hāloa ʻĀina, a Native Hawaiian-owned company led by Dr. Wade Lee and Lillian Lee. Their groundbreaking work focuses on sustainable harvesting and reforestation of endemic Hawaiian sandalwood (Santalum paniculatum) on Hawaiʻi Island. Kekoa Creative is the exclusive California retailer for these treasured products.

  • How does Kekoa Creative practice sustainability?

    Our sustainability practices include:

    • Using organic natural fibers and reclaimed waste cotton

    • Printing with water-based Algae Ink™ and other eco-friendly inks

    • Packaging with compostable materials from Noissue and EcoEnclose

    • Supporting suppliers with certifications like B Corp, ECOCERT, and FSC

    • Creating small-batch production to minimize waste

    • Designing timeless pieces that transcend fast fashion trends

What does "Slow Fashion" mean at Kekoa Creative?

Slow Fashion is our alternative to mass-produced, disposable clothing. We create limited quantities of thoughtfully designed pieces meant to last. Each item tells a cultural story and is crafted with sustainable materials and ethical production methods. This approach honors both Hawaiian cultural values and environmental responsibility.

    Are your packaging materials sustainable?

Yes, we use compostable packaging from Noissue and EcoEnclose. Our Mahalo Cards are printed on FSC certified 100% recycled paper using soy ink. We're committed to minimizing waste throughout our supply chain and creating a circular model that returns waste safely to the land.

  • What does "mālama ʻāina" mean?

Mālama ʻāina translates to "caring for the land" in Hawaiian. This cultural value guides our business practices, from material selection to packaging choices. Similarly, mālama wai (caring for the water) influences our commitment to water-based inks and avoiding harmful chemicals that could impact aquatic ecosystems.

What is the significance of your designs?

Our designs often incorporate traditional Hawaiian patterns and symbols that tell moʻolelo (stories) connected to our cultural heritage. For example, our He Mano Ka Niho pattern references shark teeth, symbolizing protection and strength. Each design is created with respect for cultural significance rather than appropriation.

How do you support Hawaiian communities?

As a Hawaiian-owned business, we support kānaka ʻōiwi communities by:

    • Partnering with Native Hawaiian-owned businesses

    • Serving as the exclusive California retailer for several Hawaiian makers

    • Educating customers about authentic Hawaiian culture

    • Creating economic opportunities that honor cultural values

    • Supporting sustainable practices that protect Hawaiian ecosystems

  • Where can I find Kekoa Creative products in person?

We participate in 3-4 markets monthly throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. Follow us on Instagram @kekoacreative for announcements about upcoming events where you can experience our products firsthand.

Do you have a physical store?

We currently operate primarily through our online store and in-person markets. While we don't have a permanent brick-and-mortar location yet, establishing an interactive educational space for Hawaiian fabric printing is a dream project for our future.
