The Kumulipo is a sacred Hawaiian mele koʻihonua—a cosmogonic creation chant tracing an unbroken lineage from cosmic elements and flora/fauna to the gods and the Hawaiian people. Within this ancestral philosophy, all physical and spiritual life forms simply become—unfolding naturally to be born, live, and exist in balance.

The chant opens in the generative primordial night (pō), recorded and translated in 1897 by Queen Liliʻuokalani:

‘O ka lipo o ka lā, ‘o ka lipo o ka pō,

The darkness of the day, the darkness of the night,

Pō wale ho‘i,

Of night alone,

Hānau ka pō,

Born was the night,

Hānau Kumulipo i ka pō, he kāne,

Born was Kumulipo in the night, a male,

Hānau Pō‘ele i ka pō, he wahine.

Born was Po‘ele in the night, a female.

In the second wā (era) of creation, the palaoa (whale) emerges into the ocean depths ("Hānau ka palaoa noho i kai"), establishing marine life as our elder relation. Depicting the humpback whale (koholā) navigating celestial currents, this piece grounds the wearer in ancestral migration and ocean stewardship (mālama moana)
