Pattern Moʻolelo: He Mano Ka Niho

From our Mai Kahiko Mai design series, the repeating triangular motifs of He Mano Ka Niho draw inspiration from ancestral kapa watermarking and traditional tattooing.

The name carries deliberate kaona (hidden linguistic depth): pronounced as he mano ka niho, it translates to "the teeth are multitudinous and countless"—speaking to ancestral continuity, collective strength, and enduring genealogies. When spoken with the kahakō as he manō ka niho, it reveals "the teeth of the shark"—invoking fierce physical guardianship, oceanic authority, and the sacred balance between Pō (ancestral night) and Ao (daylight realm).

Each piece is individually printed and stamped in our Richmond studio using bio-based Algae Ink™, leaving a soft, breathable hand-feel that softens with every wash.

  • Fit & Sizing: Relaxed, boxy unisex cut. Preshrunk. Model is 5'7", 164 lbs, 32" waist, wearing a size Medium.

  • Circular Construction: 100% natural plant fibers with a soft bamboo neck label. Sheds zero microplastics during laundering and can return safely to the soil at end of life.

  • Studio Dispatch: Hand-finished and dispatched directly from Richmond, CA.
